Creating Notes

The first way that we are going to use the wiki is as a place to create and store notes. There are many different ways that we can use computers for note taking, but you will quickly find that using the wiki for this task is incredibly powerful as it helps you connect your ideas not only only to your own thinking, but the thinking of others.

For example there's an article that you just read that you found valuable and you want to be able to find it in the future. You can copy and paste important highlights, provide a link back to it, and, if possible connect it to other information that might be related.

A good practice, then, is to make this note-taking a three-step process:

* Copy * Link * Connect

Start by clicking on "Notes" on your welcome page, Define the name of the page you want to create (as a good practice we try to use just two or three words for a page title, capitalizing the words), click "Create" which generates the proposed page, then confirm by clicking "Create" on that new page.

The next step starts like what you did before by creating a new paragraph block by clicking on the "+" icon in the journal.

For remembering an article, we suggest pasting in a a one or two key paragraphs from it. You then want to add the URL for the source so that you can go back to it later.

link

To link to a page that is from a website outside of your wiki, you use a single hard bracket, the URL, a a space and then the linked text. In this example it could be the word "source" for your linked text. Then press the escape key to finish your edit.

It's a good practice to also link that 2-3 other pieces of information or insights you or others might have previously gathered. Here you can use the search bar at the bottom of your wiki window to find related information or insights.

You will be using internal links to link to another page. These use two double hard brackets:

Note that you if have typed a name for a page exists, clicking the link will go to that page. If you have create a page that doesn't yet exist, it will ask you if you would like to create it.
